"Hot Mess" is the fourth of Zane Menzy's books I've read. When I finish a book, if I'm sorry to say goodbye to the characters, I think it affected me. I felt this way about this book and went back and re-read the last two chapters and wished there were a few more. Kieran Harrington lives in Auckland and loses his job as a journalist. He heads home and walks in on his live-in girlfriend Eve and his best friend Russell in his bed. He goes through savings and has to head home rustic Waitara, which sent me to the internet to see pictures of that beautiful part of New Zealand. Kieran's older brother Paul extends a warm welcome and his extra bedroom to his down-on-his-luck brother. I love Menzy's clever language such as his opening of Chapter 2, "The next two weeks flew by at about the speed of a disabled tortoise." Menzy has a habit of giving leading characters unusual names; and here we encounter Ziggy Zurakowski. Ziggy is tall, blond & gorgeous and as we soon learn is bisexual. Ziggy invites Kieran to spend a weekend with him at his uncle's cabin and sexual sparks ignite. While there certainly are a lot of steamy chapters, I like how Menzy takes time to let the effect simmer. When Kieran wakes up at the cabin after his first experience with a guy and only his fourth romantic partner in his lifetime, he find a brief note from Ziggy who left him stranded at the cabin. Kieran's emotions spiral into feeling hurt and used. He winds up sobbing his eyes out on the black sand beach about his "hot mess" of a life and finds a sympathetic ear of Ryan Greenbank, a guy who used to torment him in high school.. The scene where he confides in his brother Paul is sweetly touching, as nothing is quite as important as the support of your family when you're down. It's Paul's encouragement to Kieran that opens a path to forgive Ziggy. If there were any space for improvement in the book, while Kieran goes through huge changes and adjustments, Ziggy's emotional terrain is more flat from start to finish. I was left hoping for the best for the two guys, not 100% sure that Ziggy was for real. That said, 217 pages flew by and left me wanting to know more. Enjoy!
